2016 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

2016 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Salesian College is excited to be participating. All parents of students in years 7, 8 & 9 have been sent the details and forms via email or post.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by September 14.

Students from Years 7, 8  and 9  are challenged to read 15 books to gain the Premiers’ Reading Challenge Certificate signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll, however all students who actively participate will receive a Salesian Certificate of Reading Participation, regardless of number of books read.

If you would like your son to participate, please return the privacy and consent form that has been sent to you by email and return to the front office or directly to Ms Sendeckyj in the Rua Resource Centre. Copies of the consent form are available from the Rua Resource Centre if you are unable to print.

Reading is important at Salesian College

In 2016, Salesian College has become serious about reading and engaging students of years 7 and 8 in regular reading sessions and activities. Our aim is to generate excitement and passion for reading in both willing and reluctant readers. Our program allows students to choose their own reading for interest and enjoyment, combined with silent sustained reading sessions, regular feedback on their reading (thinking time!) and exciting and rewarding activities, such as publishing online reviews for house points.

Of course as a bonus, the students have the opportunity to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge for 2016 (as above).

A rewarding year for literacy and learning at Salesian College!
