A Language Learning Story
David Box (father of Jose Box in 7D) is currently a Wine Industry Consultant and has previously worked in Engineering, Sales, General Management and Executive positions with large corporations.
David was born monolingual in Geelong, lived his youth in Portland doing French to Year 11. He then worked in the UK during the early 90’s. Initially he found his French useful in the many occasions whilst holidaying in France. With travel plans for South America, he started to learn Spanish, (which he found relatively easy due to his knowledge and basis in French). David then met his Venezuelan wife through learning Spanish. Due to his knowledge of Spanish David ended up working in Venezuela bilingually for a couple of years. He then moved back to Australia in 1997. His Spanish skills ended up being part of the reason he was selected to work in Chile for the Australian company Orica.
And so David’s story highlights how the knowledge of a 2nd or 3rd language can set a person on a life journey and open many doors both in terms of career and personal life. In fact he subscribes to the saying that “To have another language is to possess a second soul.” – (Charlemagne), as David felt he also gained an insight to, and adopted some aspects of, the Latin culture.
Students sometimes don’t realise this until later in life. Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 are the perfect years to take on the challenge of learning another language as David did. The knowledge and skills of learning another language can take you on a journey that you might never have imagined.
Thanks to Mr David Box for sharing how learning another language has influenced his life.
