ACC Senior Soccer Semi-Final
With the Senior Soccer team making the semi-final for the first time in a number of years expectations were high for this group of boys.
The opponents for this match were St Joseph’s Geelong, a tough task considering they topped pool A but the Salesian boys were going to give it their all.
The game was a stalemate for the majority of the first half but the better chances going the way of St Josephs, however, failing to capitalise the half time score was 0-0.
The second half was a lot more open and free flowing with the Salesian boys beginning to get the upper hand and the pressure eventually paid off as Franco Vanni struck to put the boys up 1-0.
The goal was a wake up call for St Joseph’s as 10 minutes later they equalised and that’s the way it stayed after 90 minutes with extra time to come.
Extra time passed and there was still nothing between the sides even though the better chances went to Salesian when Tom Fritz hit the cross bar from close range. After 120 minutes of play and some tired bodies on the pitch it was time for penalties.
Giving it there all it just wasn’t to be for Salesian who went down 7-5 in the shootout and saw St Joseph’s through to the Grand Final.
A fantastic effort from the boys not only in the semi-final but all season who worked hard as a team and made the most of a great opportunity to give a great account of themselves.
I would like to thank all of the boys who played this year and for giving us year 12s a great final year!
