Asylum Seeker Certificate of Appreciation

In 2013, students in Year 8 Biretta RE were inspired by a talk given by a woman called Rachel Terkelson. Rachel is a local Oakleigh resident who raised money and awareness for Asylum Seekers in her local community by running the Melbourne Marathon. She spoke to our boys about the ‘power of one’ and in our next lesson, the boys were adamant that they too wanted to help asylum seekers in our local area. She had re-ignited our boys passion for justice and charity through her good example.

The students designed various fundraisers and the class chose their favourite ideas. A lolly stall aptly named ‘Candy Madness’ and a ‘Video Game’ challenge won the vote. And so, for the following week at lunchtime, the students ran these events. In total the boys raised $150.00

Last Wednesday 5 March I received a certificate of appreciation from Oakleigh Parish and I wanted to share it with our whole community and thank all the boys involved for showing what it truly means to be Salesian.
