As part of the Year 12 Unit 2 Religious Education course, all Year 12 students must participate in a Social Justice activity. One of the opportunities presented to them this year was to donate blood at the local Red Cross Blood Donation Centre in Pinewood.
Over Terms 2 and 3, on Friday afternoons, a group of six students would be picked up by the Red Cross courtesy bus and taken to the donation centre (accompanied by a teacher) where they would donate blood and then enjoy refreshments as a thank you for their vital community service.
This year, 50 donations have been made by our Year 12 students and accompanying teachers, which equates to saving 150 lives.
I would like to congratulate the young men who took up this opportunity to donate blood, and thank the 10 teachers who accompanied our students.
Hopefully this opportunity has exposed our students to the vital work of the Australian Red Cross Blood service and will create lifelong blood donors, as 1 in 3 Australians will need blood in their lifetime, but only 1 in 30 donate blood.
If you are interested in donating blood, please visit: http://www.donateblood.com.au/ for more information.
If you currently donate blood and would like to join the Salesian College Red25 group and have your blood donation count towards our community’s total, visit https://www.donateblood.com.au/red25/join-red25-group and join the group called ‘Salesian College’.
