Curriculum Update

This term is very much shaped and characterised by the College’s academic program.  It is important that the optimism and momentum which was generated in Term One is built upon purposefully by all boys during Term Two.  A number of events, which are outlined below, are coming up in the next few weeks.  All families are asked to take note of those events which involve their boys.

Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN Tests
As advised in letters sent home with the boys recently, Years 7 and 9 students will be completing the annual NAPLAN tests this week. Boys in both levels have had briefings about the nature and purpose of the tests in assemblies conducted last week. All the best, boys!

Unit 3/4 Report Night
An additional Report Night for parents and guardians of boys undertaking Unit 3/4 subjects will be held between 4:00pm – 6:30pm on Wednesday 21 May.  Taking the Headstart program into account, we are almost half way through the Unit 3/4 academic year.  The Report Night, therefore, is an important opportunity for parents/guardians, teachers and students to confer to discuss progress. We will be using the Parent Teacher Online booking system as usual with the log in details contained in letters posted home.

General Achievement Test
The General Achievement Test (GAT) is a key part of the VCE as, amongst other uses, it is used to moderate SAC marks and to provide an anchoring point in the event of illness or serious mishap during the November examination period.  The GAT is compulsory for all boys studying a Unit 3/4 subject. It will take place on Wednesday 11 June.  Mr Beurs is arranging to GAT preparation sessions which will be held in Period 1 on Wednesday 28 May and Wednesday 4 June.

Years 7 – 11 Semester Examinations
Semester exams start on the following dates:
• Year 9: Friday 30 May
• Year 10: Wednesday 4 June
 Years 7-9: Tuesday 10 June.

These exams are, obviously, as an important test of the depth of student learning.  For boys anticipating moving into Years 10 – 12 in 2015, the exams are also an important factor in determining subject selections. All boys in Years 7 – 11 should be devoting some of their homework time to revising for their exam(s) with the frequency and intensity of revision increasing as the exam period draws closer. The examinable subjects at Years 7-11 appear in the table below. Exam timetables are currently being prepared and will be emailed to boys in due course.
