LOTE WEEK – Monday 24 to Sunday 28 June
Students at Salesian College were fortunate enough to have an entire week dedicated to LOTE activities during the last week of Term 2. To access the LOTE news from Term 2, click here.
Throughout and in the lead up to LOTE week students had the opportunity to participate in competitions like the Swinburne Poetry Competition, the Language Perfect World Championships, the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition, the Cultural Quiz competition and the LOTE poster design competition. Students could also purchase Italian foods from the canteen like cannoli, lasagna and coffee. There was also a visit from the Gelati Van. Students were also able to come along at lunch time to learn how to play some Italian games including ‘Scopa’ and ‘Bocce.’ Many boys availed themselves of these opportunities. There was a display of Italian Cultural themes in the library and some of the Year 8 students’ work was in display on screen in the office foyer.
Language Perfect Award Winners – Year 7 and 8
The week started with a special morning tea for the Year 7 and 8 Language Perfect Award Winners. Students across Year 7 and 8 were given the opportunity to participate in this competition and 33 students achieved either a credit, bronze, silver or gold award for their efforts. What a fantastic achievement. Well done boys! The results were published on Salesian Live.
Swinburne Poetry Recital Competition – Year 7 and 8
Year 7’s and 8’s also had the opportunity to participate in the Swinburne Poetry Recital Competition. During LOTE week 36 boys took up this opportunity. Some of the boys were a little nervous, but eventually the nerves calmed and the boys performed confidently. It was a positive learning experience for all and we eagerly await the results.
Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition – Year 9, 10, 11, 12
The results of the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition for Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 were also announced during LOTE week. Twenty-one boys across these year levels participated this year with many boys achieving a Merit, Honourable Mention or High Distinction. Again the results were published on Salesian Live. Two boys, Julian Sezenias and Luis Mascaro will be participating in the Finals! Well done to all boys!
The Year 8 Cohort was also treated to a special theatrical performance called ‘Ristorante Mangiabanana’. The show was a fantastic opening to the topic the Year 8s study in Semester 2 – ‘Italian Food.’ The show was enjoyed by all and gave the Year 8 boys an opportunity to hear lots of Italian phrases related to restaurants and food.
VCE Italian – Special Morning Tea
The VCE Italian class organised a special morning tea with various Italian foods, like prosciutto, grissini, olives and sweets. They used this time to converse in Italian in preparation for their Oral Exam later in the year.
A successful week enjoyed by all and only made possible because of the work of the LOTE Department – Ms Barcellona, Ms Bonne and Ms Ryan. Thanks also to all the other staff that supported in whatever way possible, in particular Barb Monaghan and the maintenance crew.
