Salesian Visit from Rector Major Fr Angel Atime SDB
From Wednesday 6 May until Sunday 17 May Fr Angel Atime SDB, the Rector Major (World Leader) of the Salesians, will be visiting the Australia-Pacific Province of the Salesians. Fr Atime was elected to this role at the General Chapter (a meeting of Delegates from all around the world) in March last year.
The schedule for Fr Atime has him visiting the “out-reaches” of the Province in Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand before arriving in Australia on Thursday 14 May. The main purpose of this visit is to meet the Salesians, however on Sunday 17 May there will be a public Mass at 10:30am at St Margret Mary Parish followed by a gathering in the Parish Hall.
Fr Angel Atime is of Spanish origin, but has also spent quite some time in Argentina. He is very keen to go out to the far-flung areas of the ‘Salesian world’. He recognises that some of the communities in our Province are amongst the most distant from the headquarters in Rome. While in this area of the world he will be visiting our missionary work in The Solomon Islands, New Guinea and East Timor, which are strongly supported by our Salesian Missions Office.
Many will have noticed the Container near the gate leading to Timmins St. Volunteers bring donations mainly for East Timor which are then packed up by Br Joe and Fr Oreste so that they travel safely to their destination. There is a strong network of support that reaches out to the more needy centres of Salesian work that Fr Atime is keen to see. Salesian College is a substantial contributor to this outreach work and the generosity of the College Community is much appreciated. Seeing all this active work around them, students at the College come to know of the needy people in our world neighbourhood, and have the chance to join in responding as best we can.
Along with all the Salesian Centres of the Province, we extend a warm welcome to Fr Angel Atime as he comes to know us, and we pray that his Leadership will bring about a continued striving for ‘The Kingdom of Peace’ that Jesus came amongst us to establish.
