Salesian started poorly and despite being at home the boys looked slow and were consistently second to the ball. Despite this a combination of desperate defending and excellent goalkeeping from Geordan Gianakoudakis, kept Salesian in the game. Matthew Mawal was working hard up front but he had little support and the team was not gelling well. Just before half-time careless and unnecessary tackling from a Salesian player saw the team reduced to 10 men for 15 minutes with a yellow card issued. At the very last minute of the half the siege was broken and St Bernards scored.
A half-time “honest appraisal” from the coach and some clear determination to do better from the Salesian boys saw them claw their way back into the game. A cracking free kick from James Bicknell which went past the wall and into the roof of the net set the team up. Matthew Mawal continued to give great service and was creating chances and the midfield started to work harder. The game then turned into an end to end affair with plenty of shots at goal. Turnovers were costly for Salesian and goals started to go in against them. James Bicknell again converted a great free kick into the top corner to keep his team in the game. Matthew Mawal earned his team a penalty and James B stepped up to convert his hat-trick to cap off a great game.
The fight in the second half shown by Salesian was heartening but a full effort for every minute from all players was needed to get the points and the team lost 5-3.
