Senior Tennis and Cricket

ACC Senior Tennis Report

This week the Senior boys met De La Salle to do battle at home once again and they prevailed. With a convincing score line of 8 sets to 4, Salesian cruised to a comfortable victory dropping just 1 doubles and 3 singles sets. This week Geordan Giannakoudakis stepped up to play third seed doubles, taking out his match 8 games to 4. Special mention goes to Anthony Parveris who took out his singles 8-6 in yet another hard fought singles battle, and to Josh Henderson, who also did a fantastic job in his 8-0 annihilation of his De La Salle counterpart. Overall another solid performance for the boys, taking out their second consecutive win.

Salesian College 6/152 def Mazenod College 8/109

Last week the First XI cricket team had the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd one more time, taking on close rivals Mazenod. Due to the rain that morning, our usual home ground Essex Heights Reserve was unavailable. We won the toss, and opted to bat, starting with the same two openers, Robbie D’Leema and Connor Andrews. We lost an early wicket when the usually reliable Connor Andrews edged a ball onto his own stumps, leaving us at 1/4, bringing Gehan Seneviratne to the crease. After Robbie and Gehan had just started to get their partnership going, Gehan was unlucky to get caught and bowled. With our run rate a little lower than we liked it to be, Robbie looked to push a quick single however he was run out for a solid 16. With Aidan De La Motte coming to the crease, myself and Aidan put on 25 runs for the fourth wicket before Aidan lost his wicket for 14, getting caught at deep mid-wicket. Sitting at 4/67 off 23 overs we needed to tick the score over a bit quicker. Jordan and I put on a partnership of 55, before Jordan’s cameo came to an end on 27. In the second last over I got out for a respectable 53. Sanjay Kahawatte and Pat Burnell came in at the end hitting some crucial runs to get us to 6/152.

Defending an average total of 152, Mazenod got off to a decent start with their score at 0/33 off 5 overs. They were going along nicely until Gehan came onto bowl, ripping through their top order, claiming the first 5 wickets for the team. After his unplayable spell of bowling, he finished with figures of 5/3 off 6 overs, with the team pulling Mazenod’s score back to 5/42 from 16 overs. Sanjay came on to bowl a tight spell of bowling, only going for 8 off his 6 overs. Dishan Malalasekera came on to in the middle overs to push through the overs, also claiming one wicket. Aneeb Adrees’ late spell grabbed a couple of wickets for the team. One of them coming from a stunning one handed catch at slip by Pat Burnell. He finished with figures of 2/5, putting the game out of Mazenod’s reach, finishing on 8/109.
